UNICEF RIGHTS RESPECTING SCHOOLS AWARD

What is the Rights Respecting School Award?

The Unicef UK Rights Respecting Schools Award (RRSA) supports schools across the UK to embed children’s human rights in their ethos and culture. The award recognises achievement in putting the UN Convention on the Right of the Child (UNCRC) at the heart of a school’s practice to improve well-being and help all children and young people realise their potential. The award is based on principles of equality, dignity, respect, non-discrimination and participation. The initiative started in 2006 and schools involved in the Award have reported a positive impact on relationships and well-being, leading to better learning and behaviour, improved academic standards and less bullying.

Coteford Infant School holds the Bronze Award and is working to achieve our RRSA Recognition of Commitment: Silver Award. 

Why we believe it is important:-

For children to make the most of their opportunities they need to have an understanding of their rights. School is responsible for promoting a rights-respecting environment and for developing and understanding that rights apply equally to everyone globally. Children should be given the opportunity to learn about the wider world and understand their responsibilities so that everyone can fulfil their rights. 

What will we do to promote a rights-respecting environment?

  • Assemblies to teach children their rights
  • Monthly newsletters to keep the whole community informed about each month's Article we are learning about. 
  • Children's rights will be displayed around school to help with understanding the articles.
  • Classroom Charters will be agreed, designed and put in place around the school.
  • The language of respect and responsibility is used by everyone in school.
  • We show respect to our environment so that others in the future may have their rights.
  • Participating in Unicef's Day for change and linking all charity work across the year to the UNRC.
